I GARDEN…
by Ryan
(aka Star of the Week IV)
I garden
I garden
for the sun-cause I'm as pale as the moon
I garden
for the flowers-
their beauty and their smell...
I garden for the showers-
they bring beauty as well.
I garden
in hopes of seeing an assassin bug...
and if I see him near my plants-
I'll give him a big 'ol assassin hug.
I garden for the worms
butterflies, birds and bees
I garden for the storms.
Have you ever heard the trees?
I garden
let's just say-for the topsoil's sake.
A couple thousand years to make-
and just a hundred to take.
I garden
because we once had the richest
It's become our largest export-
yet we take it for granted.
I garden
for erosion-
and the floods that always follow.
the disastrous disappearance of our dirt -
is definitely a difficult pill to swallow.
I garden
for the runoff
in this mono-crop monopoly.
The soil is dead!!!
We should be growing beets and broccoli-
what's the product instead?
Nitrogen goes
from a field, to streams
and it might just flow
near the Field of Dreams.
I garden for red fig tomatoes
and Green Zebra toMOTToes-
don't forget the blue potatoes...
eat the RAINBOW's my motto.
I garden
because I'm a rebel
I say "steph" the system-
I'll take a shovel and some seeds
and hope I'm blessed with wisdom.
I garden
because I'm gangsta-
and that's what gangsta's do.
Much love goes out to Coolio...
And my gangsta boo
She most "stephinitely" loves me
partly thanks ta you.
I garden
man the future'd be good.
I garden
because of The Survival Podcast,
and the Power Hour Crew-
just to name a few.
I garden
in my greenhouse
although I wish it were blue-
I just got a bigger greenhouse-
wishes really do come true.
I garden
for the kids
and the memories they'll take
I garden to stay a kid-
that part's a piece of cake.
I garden
for the roses-
mine barely have thorns.
I garden for my hat-
although it barely got worn.
I garden for my cat-
she likes my barley and corn-
I gardened for my fat-
I garden
for James-
he can't wait for carrot duty...
for Natalie-
Gardens never have an excess of beauty...
for Isabel-
She's my comic and my cutie...
for Stephanie-
And her weed-pullin' booty!
I garden for myself-
I deserve it.
Go ahead and accuse me-
I garden for you and I garden for my neighbors
I garden for the Earth-it's my duty.
I garden
because it's easy
I garden
because it's hard
I garden
because grass is such a silly thing-
for a beast of a backyard.
I garden
for prevention
and to combat a hellish agriculture system that contributes to:
diabetes, obesity, cancer, depression, topsoil and ecosystem destruction and so much more.
I garden
to oppose that system
to set an example for more
to remember our history
and the future we’ve yet to explore.
Why do YOU garden?
or maybe more importantly for some-
Why AREN'T you gardening yet?

I am in awe of this post. Amazing. I am not gardening yet because I'm renting....but SOON my friend, SOON. Thanks for making me smile on this cold afternoon. :-)
my thesis research project is a 9-week summer gardening program for overweight middle school children!
i garden to fight childhood obesity.
That was a great post! I don't garden although we have a few indoor plants but I do support local agriculture and farmers who raise grass fed animals. Can't wait for the farmers markets to begin again!
This is amazing! Great work, Ryan! : ) (I miss your posts, too, Steph!)
A-MAZE-ING.
I tried gardening and failed. Can't wait for your garden posts so I can try again!
I WANT to garden and I am not gardening yet because I don't know where to start?! Can Ryan give me tips?? Great post though!!
Ah, love this :)
Not only a good reminder, but cute and funny too!
I garden in pots inside (microgreens) in the winter, and herbs and microgreens on the porch in the summer....apartment living has its gardening limits!
This is the best things I've read all day! Of course I love the line about the birds and bees, but also you're weed-pulling booty. Y'all are too cute for words. As usual, I love the way you all love each other so much.
Billy and I gardened last spring in honor of his father who had passed away a few months before. We didn't have quite the green thumb he did, but it was a great experience!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend full of...gardening. :)
p.s. Hi Ryan! I love your post. I'm trying to get my husband to write a guest post for me! :)
Hello Dorry. Thanks for the kind words. I haven't written anything since 10th grade probably, so that's why there hasn't been a post all week. It wasn't as easy as I had imagined. I need to remember what my old martial arts teacher told me about my mild OCD. "Don't strive for perfection because it will drive you crazy. Strive for excellence."
Worm poop is where it's at. Let them do all the work and you don't have to be a good gardener. Even in container gardens that stuff is good as gold. As a matter of fact, after I post this I'll be ordering my red wigglers finally. Some day I'll do a post about that. Don't give up though. My first year of gardening was awesome. Probably because I didn't know anything and gardening and worked off of common sense. Well, for me anyway. "I am a tomato plant, what do I need?" Air, sunlight, water(not as much as I used to think), and good soil. What is my natural environment? Same thing I did the first time I went morel mushroom "hunting" I am a mushroom. What kind of environment will I thrive in? I just figured damp and dead wood. 2 five gallon buckets later and I realized my logic must have worked. Trial and error, you can do it. I would say the most important thing has got to be the soil. Import some good organic material if you have to. I started with Mel Bartholamew's mix from his Square Foot Gardening book. 1/3 pete moss, 1/3 vermiculite or pearlite, 1/3 organic compost...as many different types as you can find. Now I realize I probably didn't have to. I'm probably 3 feet down now in my little micro pond, and it's still rich, black goodness. I'm getting a little lengthy now, so it's time to go order some worms.
ryan, you are my hero! I really need you to come plant a garden here for us. Or maybe we can move closer to you so we can feed off your lawn. I like local farmers, hehe!Great job though, impressive!

I have missed your posts this week! Hope you kicked that take home tests ass!!
um, holy crap, that was a good post. i am in awe of both your rhyming and gardening abilities, Ryan! i'm determined to do better in the gardening department this year, but i'll leave the rhymes to you. hi Stephanie!
I read every single word and loved it all!! What an awesome treat for me this morning. Thanks, Ryan!!
Ryan, I loved the post! And your garden looks mighty impressive and healthy. Last year I didn't have a great garden at all, so this year I'm looking to have an awesome one. Lots of tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and herbs. Let's hope Mother Nature cooperates this year.
I absolutely love this post. And oh how I wish I had a garden!! At my family's home in Massachusetts, we grow tomatoes and zucchini and pumpkins and it's one of the best parts of the year for me! Thanks for sharing :)
WOW!
Wowowowowow!! This should be published. Seriously!! Ryan has some poetry talent!!
Your garden is beautiful. I am envious of your knowledge and skills in working the earth. I hope tom have my own little plot of land someday!
Wow what an amazing and moving post. Really nice job!
Lovely post! You obviously put a lot of time into it and it's very inspiring. I WANT to garden, but my follow-through is horrible. I moved into a house with so much garden...and it was overwhelming. I let it go to waste. We're moving this summer and I hope to find a house with a smaller and more manageable garden.
I notice your box...do you do square foot gardening? That's what I REALLY want to do!
Here's a fabulous gardening site by an urban gardener here in Toronto: http://www.yougrowgirl.com/
I love this.
